Long, golden stalks swayed in a hot, steady breeze; a cascade of rustling shifted around the lanky form as it made its way quietly toward the small company of grazing gazelles. Golden fur spotted with black blended with the scenery, turning Sha nearly invisible as his brown eyes swept their intent gaze from one gazelle to the other. Small, rounded ears shifted back and forth to catch the sounds of any oncoming danger, and long, ringed tail flicked eagerly on the warm ground.
There. A small gazelle, no more than an adolescent, with a slight limp. All sound and life slipped away as Sha set his sights on his unfortunate quarry. He did not hear the rustling grass; no longer did he feel the hot sun pounding upon his back. There was only one thing in the world now--only one purpose. To kill and eat.
The young cheetah crept as far forward as he could, but stopped many yards away, afraid to go closer lest he blow his cover. He crouched lower than before, spine bunching, hears flattening....and then he broke! All thoughts vanished from the cheetah's mind as he stretched out his lean body across the golden savanna, shooting across the ground at frightening speeds. Sha reveled in his speed, his power, as he flipped his tail this way and that to keep up with the gazelle's zigzagging tactics.
Within a few seconds the gazelle stumbled, its injured leg giving out beneath it. Sha was on it at once, clamping his jaws over the creature's windpipe as he held it down and waited for death. Hot blood filled the cheetah's mouth, and his eyes lit with the urge to eat. Still he held on, despite his rumbling stomach--more than once had Sha released too early, only to find his prey far more resilient than he would have imagined; a gazelle had even jumped to its feet and gotten clean away from him.
The gazelle finally kicked its last, and Sha released it with a satisfied growl. He straightened up on his long legs and cast his gaze around, sniffing the air uncertainly for fear that he was not alone. More than once had he lost his kills to hyenas or lone lions.
There, a rustling in the grass too loud to be mere wind. Sha tensed, spinning to face the area, eyes narrowed and teeth bared. Not that he could fight off an attacker; if the creature broke cover and went for his kill, Sha knew he would have to give it up. But not a moment sooner. Show yourself, coward! he thought, ears flattening as he released a growl. This was why he hated other cats.
